Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, “What else could this mean? – Shannon L. Alder
The lens through which we view the world determines how we interpret events, relate to others, and define meaning.
Perspective provides context and assumptions that filter our experiences. We become trapped in narrow worldviews that limit our growth potential without occasionally shifting our perspectives.
Stepping outside our default perspectives allows us to see life through fresh eyes. It opens us up to new interpretations, information, and possibilities that may have been obscured.
A shift in perspective can profoundly alter how we see ourselves, our relationships, and the events that shape our lives. It can reveal our blind spots, unexamined biases, and flawed beliefs.
It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view. – George Elliot
Shifting perspective requires the courage to question what we think we know. It asks us to challenge preconceived notions, abandon rigid mindsets, and reconsider assumptions. Doing so can feel threatening.
But the discomfort of perspective-shifting expands our understanding and compassion. It is a temporary discomfort for an enlightened mind.
We must all periodically shift perspectives to avoid the pitfalls of assumptions and bias. Seeking the perspectives of others who have different life experiences is one decisive way to jolt ourselves out of the ruts of limited thinking.
We keep our worldviews flexible by opening our minds to alternate viewpoints and fresh insights, inviting greater wisdom into our lives. A willingness to shift perspective, even slightly, allows new possibilities to reveal themselves.
